Fruit flies can be found in other areas of your home besides your fruit If you have fruit flies, it can be a pain to have them always fly around and annoy you. If you have fruit flies in your home, you can get rid of them for good, but you need to make some changes around your home first. Read on to learn about a few of these changes you need to make.

1. Remove the Fruit on Your Counters

If you have fruit sitting out on your counters, you may have tiny flies everywhere. Put your fruit away in your refrigerator instead of leaving them out on the counter. If you want the fruit left out, don't buy quite as much or buy proper storage bags so nothing goes bad out on the counter. If your fruit does end up going bad, toss it into the trash or eat it immediately to prevent fruit flies.

2. Regularly Clean Drains

The drains around your home can build up with all types of debris including hair, soap scum, food particles, and grease/oil. All of this buildup can cause a clog, but it can also be a good place for fruit flies to build their nests. Clean the drains out around your home using either a drain cleaner or an all-natural remedy to clean the drains. For example, you could pour hot water down the drain, focusing the water around the edge of the drain opening. A mixture of vinegar and baking soda can also help clean the drain out and will kill flies in the drain as well. Do this for every drain around your home, including floor drains.

3. Remove Indoor Plants

Indoor plants may also be the cause of fruit flies. The moisture in the dirt can attract fruit flies or other pests. If you have indoor plants, move them outside if you can. If they need to stay inside, spray them with an apple-cider vinegar spray, or you can create a trap using a mixture of apple-cider vinegar and beer in a small cup that you place in the dirt of the plant. This can help trap and kill the fruit flies.

If fruit flies have taken over your home, you should call a local pest control company to get rid of these pests. Use the information above to also help you get rid of the pests.
